    • Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

Air fryer sweet potato wedges are a delicious side dish or a tasty healthy snack that everyone can enjoy. They're effortless to make and with the help of an air fryer and minimal ingredients, you can have crispy sweet potato wedges in less time than it would take to make them in the oven.

I love homemade wedges and using my air fryer cooks them perfectly every time! My air fryer potato wedges made with white potatoes are on a weekly rotation in my house! But when I want something a little more on the healthy side I make these sweet potato wedges.

With their sweet and savoury flavour, these air-fried wedges make the perfect side dish for any meal. They're even great as a snack on their own with your favorite dipping sauce!

    🛒 What You'll Need

    • Sweet Potatoes - I use 3 medium size sweet potatoes for this recipe. Look for firm sweet potatoes and avoid any that are bruised or sprouting.
    • Seasoning - for this recipe I use salt, black pepper, dried oregano, dried coriander, garlic powder and smoked paprika.
    • Oil - I use olive oil, but you can also use sunflower or vegetable oil if you prefer.
    • Cornflour - also known as cornstarch. This will help you achieve perfectly crispy wedges.

🔪 How To Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

This is a quick visual guide please see the recipe card below for full step-by-step instructions.

    1. Cut the potatoes into wedges - Wash and thoroughly dry the sweet potatoes. Then using a sharp knife cut off the ends of the sweet potatoes. Next place the sweet potato cut side down on a cutting board, cut each potato into half lengthways, and cut each half into quarters.

    2. Toss the potatoes in cornflour - Place the potato wedges in a large mixing bowl, add a tablespoon of cornflour (cornstarch) and toss well. Making sure each and every wedge is covered in the cornflour.

    3. Season the wedges - In a small bowl mix the spices and herbs together. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the spices then add this to the sweet potatoes. Toss well, making sure the wedges are covered in the spices mixture. Season with salt and pepper.

    4. Cook - Place the wedges in the air fryer basket, no need to keep them separated. Cook at 200°C (390°F) for 20 minutes. Remove the basket from the air fryer halfway through cooking and give the basket a little shake. Return the basket to the air fryer and cook for the remaining time.

    🧑‍🍳 Top Tips

    • Ensure the sweet potato wedges are cut into even thicknesses so they cook evenly.
    • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer you may need to cook the wedges in batches if needed.
    • Adjust the cooking time depending on the thickness of your sweet potato wedges. Larger wedges will need longer, and smaller wedges will need less time.
    • I don't soak these wedges. Sweet potatoes have a lower starch content so there is no need for soaking before you cook them.
    • I don't preheat my air fryer, the model I use doesn't require preheating. If you cook these in batches the second batch will probably need 1-2 minutes less cook time. So please do bear that in mind.
    • Every air fryer cooks differently. From my experience, different brands, styles and capacities can vary in cooking time. This means that your food may need a longer or shorter cooking time, so keep an eye on them. If they look cooked before the recipe time states test them with a sharp knife. If the knife goes through easily and the wedge feels tender then it is cooked.

    ❓FAQs

How do I know when the sweet potato wedges are done cooking in the air fryer?

Check the wedges a couple of minutes before they are due to be cooked. Using a sharp knife pierce one of the wedges. If teh knife goes in easily the wedges are done.

Why are my sweet potato wedges not crispy?

The most common reason why your wedges are not crispy is that you have added too many wedges to the air-fryer basket. If you overfill the basket the heat can generate steam, that excess moisture will cause the wedges to be soggy. Another reason your wedges may be soggy is that they weren't dried enough after you washed/scrubbed them.

Should you peel sweet potatoes for wedges?

No, you don't need to peel sweet potatoes for wedges.

Can I swap the spices in the recipe?

Yes, you can. You can use any of your favourite herbs and spices to make these. I would keep the salt and black pepper though.

    👩‍🍳 Storage / Making Ahead

    • To Make Ahead - these wedges really are best made fresh, but if you want to make them ahead then you can have them cut into wedges and tossed in the seasoning. You can do the the day before you are due to serve them. Before serving them toss them in olive oil before cooking.
    • Storage - leftover sweet potato wedges can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for 3 - 4 days. They should be cooled completely before transferring them to the fridge. For best results, store the leftover wedges in a container lined with paper towel to absorb any moisture or oil.
    • Freezing - spread the cooked and cooled sweet potato wedges out on a parchment-lined baking tray. Place the baking sheet in the freezer, and freeze for 1-2 hours, or until the sweet potatoes are frozen solid. Once frozen, transfer the sweet potato wedges to an airtight, freezer-safe container.
    • To reheat from cold - place the cold wedges in the air fryer basket, set the air fryer to reheat and cook for about 10 minutes, check after 5 minutes.
    • To reheat from frozen - place the frozen wedges into the air fryer basket and cook at 200°C (300° F) for 10 - 15 minutes, or until piping hot and crispy again.

    • My Air Fryer - I use a Ninja Max, basket-style air fryer that has a capacity of 4L.
    • Every air fryer cooks differently. From my experience, different brands, styles and capacities can vary in cooking time.
